The No MUOS movement which was formed to oppose the ground station, argues that large parts of Sicily face ecological risks linked to military infrastructure...
Hundreds of protesters gathered in Niscemi on Saturday March 28, 2026 and opposed US military installations in Sicily.
Their focus was on the MUOS satellite system and the Naval Radio Transmitter Facility operated by the United States Navy.
Footage showed demonstrators marched through the town with flags and banners which read 'No war, no rearmament. Let’s free ourselves', 'Get the US bases out of our land', and 'No F35 in Trapani-Birgi. Not in Trapani, not anywhere else'.
The infrastructure formed part of a global communications network which coordinated military operations across multiple regions.
“We oppose American imperialism and Zionism […] That’s why we won’t stop; we will continue to demonstrate and denounce this subjugation we have towards the Americans,” said one activist, Emiliano.
“All this brings only misery and death to the population. We won’t stop until there is a change of direction,” he added.
Opposition to the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) in Niscemi dated back more than a decade, protests intensified in 2013 when activists attempted blocking the installation of antennas.
The base was located within the Sughereta di Niscemi Nature Reserve, a protected area that campaigners say has been affected by both military activity and environmental damage.
