Jigawa State Government says the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is safe and effective, urging parents to support immunisation of girls aged 9–14.
The Jigawa State Government has reassured residents of the safety and effectiveness of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
Dr Shehu Sambo, Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, gave the assurance in an interview with newsmen in Dutse.
Sambo said the HPV vaccine was safe, harmless and protective, adding that its administration would significantly improve maternal health outcomes in the state.
He said the vaccine had been integrated into the state’s routine immunisation programme, targeting girls between the ages of nine and 14.
“We are assuring the people of Jigawa that the HPV vaccine is safe. Since the state government agreed to facilitate its introduction from the Federal Government down to states, local governments and communities, it has become a key intervention for improving maternal health outcomes.
“Cervical cancer kills many women, and most cases present late. If we are able to protect our girls early, we will improve the survival and wellbeing of women in the state,” he said.
Sambo assured parents and caregivers that the vaccine was safe and had been widely used across the world.
CBI News reports he said the agency is intensifying public sensitisation to address misconceptions and vaccine hesitancy among residents.
He further said awareness creation and community mobilisation activities were ongoing to improve acceptance and uptake of the vaccine across the state.
