What started as another exchange in Yemen’s long-running war has now reached Saudi Arabia’s airports, leaving civilians dead and dozens injured.

Three civilians are dead and 36 others injured after attacks hit two airports in Saudi Arabia, with Yemen’s Houthi rebels claiming responsibility.

The attacks targeted Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group used ballistic missiles and drones, describing the strikes as retaliation for what it called Saudi “aggression” against Yemen.

Saudi aviation authorities say they are working with security agencies to assess the damage and protect passengers and airport workers.

The attacks mark a fresh escalation in Yemen’s long-running conflict between Houthi forces, backed by Iran, and Yemen’s internationally recognised government, which has received Saudi support.

The violence is also affecting civilians far beyond the battlefield. The United Nations says more than 200,000 people have been displaced inside Yemen since the conflict reignited in July.

There have also been reports of Houthi missile and drone attacks on Aden airport, although no casualties were reported there.

The latest attacks have drawn condemnation from several countries and the Muslim World League.

For ordinary Yemenis and people across the region, the concern is familiar, another escalation could mean more displacement, more disruption and an even harder path towards peace.
