One game. One hammering. One sacking. Tunisia aren’t wasting time at the 2026 World Cup — and they’ve called on a familiar miracle worker to steady the ship.
Right, so Tunisia have pressed the panic button already, according to cbinews.tv. Sabri Lamouchi is out as head coach after just one match at the 2026 World Cup. The trigger? A brutal 5-1 thrashing by Sweden in their Group opener.
The Athletic first reported on Monday that Lamouchi was on the brink, and the Tunisian Football Federation, FTF, didn’t hang about. They confirmed his contract had been terminated, making him the first manager binned after a single game at this tournament.
Enter Herve Renard. The 57-year-old Frenchman is back in men’s international football after leaving Saudi Arabia in April. He’s signed on until the end of the World Cup, with Tunisia still to face Japan on 20 June and the Netherlands on 25 June.
The FTF told cbinews.tv that they’ll sit down with Renard after the tournament to discuss a “long-term collaboration” — but first, he’s got to try and salvage their campaign.
If anyone can pull off a World Cup shock, it’s Renard. This is the man who led Morocco to their first World Cup in 20 years back in 2018, and masterminded Saudi Arabia’s famous 2-1 win over eventual champions Argentina in 2022. He also took France’s women to the quarterfinals in 2023. Oh, and he’s won AFCON twice — with Zambia in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015. Proper pedigree.
Lamouchi only lasted five months in the job. He took over from Sami Trabelsi after Tunisia crashed out of AFCON 2025 on penalties to Mali in the last-16. The 54-year-old, who’s had spells at Ivory Coast, Rennes, Nottingham Forest, Cardiff City and Al Riyadh, called the Sweden defeat “painful”. Understatement of the year.
Tunisia have been to six World Cups and never made it past the group stage. No pressure, Herve.
