Saraki says Tinubu did not wield significant influence during Muhammadu Buhari’s administration...
Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu wielded significant decision-making power during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
CBI News reports that Saraki made the clarification during an appearance on Channels Television, while responding to suggestions that Tinubu may have played a role in the political and legal challenges he faced as Senate President.
According to him, Tinubu did not have the level of influence widely attributed to him within Buhari’s government and was not involved in decisions surrounding his prosecution.
“That’s not fair on President Tinubu. During former President Buhari’s administration, Tinubu didn’t have the say that they claimed he had,” Saraki said.
He explained that actions leading to his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal and investigations linked to the Offa robbery incident were not influenced by Tinubu.
Saraki maintained that his decisions as Senate President were guided by what he believed to be in the national interest, even though they later resulted in political persecution.
“I was doing what I felt was in the interest of the country as the President of the Senate, and for doing those things I was then persecuted,” he said.
He further stressed that Tinubu was not among those responsible for initiating or carrying out the actions that led to his Code of Conduct Bureau trial and other allegations during that period.
