It was nearly 11 pm on Wednesday when gunshots shattered the calm at Nigeria’s top policy institute. By the time it was over, one attacker was dead.
Security operatives at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, Plateau State, fought off another attack by suspected gunmen on Wednesday night, killing one of the assailants in a gun battle, cbinews.tv reports.
The incident happened at about 11 pm when the gunmen reportedly tried to breach the institute’s security perimeter. They didn’t get far. Security personnel on duty repelled them.
NIPSS confirmed the attack in a statement issued on Thursday by its Head of Public Affairs, Dr Osime Samuel.
According to the statement, the attackers exchanged fire with security operatives but were forced to retreat after what the institute called a swift and coordinated response. One assailant was killed in the shootout, while others fled with varying degrees of injuries.
The institute moved to calm nerves, reassuring participants, staff, their families and the public that the security of lives and property remains its highest priority. It also urged residents to ignore misinformation that could cause panic.
This is the second scare in just two weeks. The last attack on the institute and its surrounding community left three people dead, including security personnel. That incident pushed security agencies to tighten surveillance around the country’s foremost policy and leadership training institution.
