Caleb Mutfwang says gunmen disguised as NDLEA operatives to infiltrate and attack Jos community.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has revealed that gunmen behind the recent deadly attack in Jos disguised themselves as operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to gain access to the community before launching the assault.
CBI News reports that the attack, which occurred in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, left at least 28 people dead and several others injured, sparking widespread outrage.
Speaking on Politics Today, Mutfwang explained that the attackers carefully mimicked the pattern of NDLEA operations to deceive residents.
“Obviously, the attackers have studied the psychology of the people who are used to seeing operatives of the NDLEA who come to raid neighbouring communities… So, they came in that manner, hooded, and were shooting in the manner NDLEA officers used to shoot. So people took it for granted that it was an NDLEA incursion… and they didn’t resist it initially,” he said.
He noted that by the time residents realised the truth, the damage had already been done.
“But when they realised it, a lot of damage had been done. And before they could wake up to begin to pursue these attackers, they had made an escape. It’s quite unfortunate,” he added.
The governor confirmed that no arrests have been made so far but assured that security agencies are acting on credible intelligence.
“At the moment, no arrests have been made in regard to this particular attack. But I’d like to assure Plateau people and Nigerians that we have some actionable intelligence that the security agencies are following up,” he said.
While declining to disclose further details, he expressed optimism that ongoing investigations would identify those responsible.
Mutfwang described the attack as premeditated and professionally executed, noting that the gunmen demonstrated advanced weapon-handling skills.
He added that both residents and security agencies were caught off guard, especially as the state had experienced about 10 months of relative peace before the incident.
During a recent visit, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with victims’ families and directed security agencies to track down the perpetrators.
The governor, however, urged residents to remain calm and avoid reprisals, warning that the attackers’ aim was to destabilise the state and disrupt ongoing peace efforts.
