Fresh attack in Plateau State leaves three dead in Jos South...
No fewer than three people have been killed after unidentified gunmen launched a fresh attack on Nyamgo Gyel in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, raising renewed concerns over security in the region.
CBI News reports that the incident comes just days after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Jos following earlier violence in the state.
The victims Luka Sandu Pam (36), Samuel Davou (38), and Deme Saidu (35) were reportedly ambushed while returning from Gero on a motorbike.
According to the Gyel Youth Leader, Dung Davou, the victims were part of a group of about 15 youths returning from a mining site when they came under attack.
He told Channels Television that the group encountered suspected armed herdsmen, triggering panic as gunshots rang out.
“We started hearing sporadic gunshots, and everyone scattered. Unfortunately, three of our people were killed,” Davou said, calling on authorities to urgently address what he described as repeated and unprovoked attacks.
The latest violence follows a recent assault on Angwan Rukuba in Jos North, where over 20 people were killed and several others injured, further heightening fears among residents.
Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has attributed the recent surge in attacks to a lapse in vigilance after a prolonged period of relative peace.
Speaking on Politics Today, he explained that attackers exploited the situation by studying residents’ behaviour and striking unexpectedly.
He noted that in a previous incident, the gunmen mimicked operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to deceive residents and security forces.
While describing the situation as troubling, the governor expressed hope that the attacks would be contained and not persist.
