Fear and grief have once again gripped Plateau State after suspected gunmen launched a deadly midnight attack on Ngbra Zongo community in Bassa LGA, killing at least 13 residents and leaving many others injured in yet another wave of violence shaking the region.
CBI News reports that tragedy struck in plateau state during a fresh attack on Ngbra Zongo community in Kwall District, Bassa Local Government Area.
The deadly invasion triggered panic across the community, with several residents sustaining varying degrees of injuries while others fled into nearby bushes for safety.
Speaking to journalists in Jos, a resident, Philip Alanga, disclosed that the attackers stormed the community around midnight, shooting indiscriminately before using machetes and other dangerous weapons on residents.
According to Alanga, the assailants moved from house to house, attacking innocent people and leaving behind widespread destruction.
“They came into the community around midnight and started shooting and hacking people to death. They moved from one house to another, attacking innocent people,” he said.
He added that many residents escaped into nearby bushes, while several injured victims are currently in urgent need of medical attention.
Reacting to the incident, the Secretary General of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Danjuma Auta, condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric, tragic, and unacceptable.
Auta expressed concern over the recurring attacks in Bassa LGA and other parts of Plateau State, urging security agencies to intensify surveillance and provide better protection for vulnerable communities.
He also called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killings to prevent further bloodshed in the state.
Efforts to get an official response from the police proved unsuccessful as calls were not answered as of the time of filing this report.
The latest attack comes days after gunmen invaded Nding Susut community in Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area on Tuesday, killing five persons and injuring three others.
Residents revealed that the attackers stormed the area around 8 p.m. and opened fire on people gathered outside their homes.
A community member, Weng Christopher said that the gunmen targeted members of a family seated in their compound, causing panic across the community.
According to him, one of the victims initially escaped but was later chased down and killed by the attackers.
“This is becoming too frequent. People are living in constant fear. We can no longer sleep peacefully because these attacks keep happening,” Christopher lamented.
Also reacting, the Publicity Secretary of Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, condemned the killings and described the persistent attacks as deeply disturbing.
