Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi says eliminating terrorists is a religious obligation, but warns that counterterrorism operations must not lead to the killing of innocent civilians.
According to cbinews.tv, Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has reacted to the reported killing of top ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki during a joint military operation allegedly carried out by Nigerian and American forces.
Gumi made his remarks in a Facebook post on Saturday while commenting on the announcement made by United States President Donald Trump regarding the operation.
The cleric stated that although fighting terrorism remains necessary, such operations must not come at the expense of innocent lives.
“It’s a religious obligation to annihilate terrorists, but not with Beelzebub and hands stained with the blood of innocent men, women, and children,” Gumi wrote.
The reaction followed Trump’s claim that American forces, working alongside the Nigerian Armed Forces, successfully eliminated Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, whom he described as the second-in-command of ISIS globally.
According to Trump, the operation was executed through what he described as a “meticulously planned and very complex mission.”
“Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield,” Trump stated.
He further claimed that the ISIS commander believed he could evade capture by hiding in Africa but was eventually tracked through intelligence operations.
“He will no longer terrorise the people of Africa, or help plan operations to target Americans. With his removal, ISIS’s global operation is greatly diminished,” Trump added while commending the Nigerian government for its cooperation.
The reported operation has continued to generate widespread reactions online, with many describing it as a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism in the region.
However, critics have also raised concerns over the humanitarian consequences of military offensives in conflict zones, especially regarding the protection of civilians.
Nigeria has battled insurgency involving ISIS-affiliated factions and other extremist groups in the North-East for more than a decade, with thousands killed and displaced by the conflict.
