It’s been days of tension in Ikire, and now Governor Ademola Adeleke is stepping in big time. A full coroner inquest has just been ordered into the shootings that left people dead and injured at the town’s Naira and Kobo Junction.

So, what really happened? On August 24, 2026, violence erupted around the Motor Park Area in Ikire, Irewole Local Government. There were reports of killings, shootings and injuries, and it shook the whole community.

Now, Governor Adeleke isn’t taking it lightly. He’s signed an Executive Order, effective from August 31, 2026, to set up a proper Coroner Inquest and Panel of Inquiry to get to the bottom of it.

And this isn’t just a surface-level probe. According to cbinews.tv, the panel has been told to dig deep: What exactly led to the shootings? How many victims were there and who are they? What were the immediate and remote causes? And crucially, is there any criminal responsibility linked to the deaths?

The team itself is quite heavyweight. Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola will chair the inquest, with Mr. Abiodun Badiora as Secretary. Joining them are retired AIG Aderanti Kayode, Mr. Dele Akintayo representing the Nigerian Bar Association, Comrade Wale Balogun for Civil Society Organisations, a community representative from Ikire, and Dr. Babatunde Afolabi as the Medical and Forensic Representative.

Their brief is wide. They’ll be looking at the role security operatives played, whether live ammunition was used, and if that use followed the law, rules of engagement and human rights standards. They’ve also got powers to point fingers where necessary — whether it’s an individual, political actor, transport union member, public official, or security personnel whose actions or inaction contributed to the chaos.

The panel can recommend prosecution, disciplinary action, compensation for victims, and even institutional reforms to stop this from happening again.

To do that properly, they can summon witnesses, demand police and medical records, inspect the scene, take oral and documentary evidence, and even recommend protection for witnesses who might face intimidation.

Governor Adeleke has also ordered that everything be preserved, firearms records, station diaries, communication logs, duty rosters, medical and autopsy reports, photos, videos, the lot. Plus, he’s asked the Inspector-General of Police, the Police Service Commission and the Osun State Commissioner of Police to take interim administrative steps against any officer whose continued presence could compromise the inquiry.

The panel is expected to start sitting within seven days of inauguration and deliver its final report within 30 days of its first sitting, unless the Governor approves an extension.

Meanwhile, the state government is calling on victims’ families, eyewitnesses, journalists, transport workers, police officers, medical personnel, CSOs, political parties, community leaders and human rights activists to come forward with memoranda and evidence.
