It's official: Gemini is now Google's fastest-growing product ever, but can it hold off ChatGPT and a wave of powerful rivals?
Well, Google has just hit a massive milestone.
According to cbinews.tv, CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, that its AI assistant, Gemini, has now crossed one billion monthly users. Yes, one billion.
Pichai described it as "our fastest-growing product ever" and the 14th Google product to reach that magic billion-user mark. The figure is based on how many people use the Gemini app across Google's entire ecosystem.
And the timing is quite interesting. The announcement comes just a week after a major shake-up in Google's AI division. Nobel Prize-winning chemist Demis Hassabis has stepped back from day-to-day management of Google DeepMind, the lab behind the Gemini models, and several top researchers, including long-time engineering chief Jeff Dean, have also moved on.
There is also the small matter of its next big model. The flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro, which was initially slated for June, still hasn't dropped, while competitors have been pushing out models that many consider more powerful, especially for coding - which is where the real money is right now.
Still, Google has one huge advantage: its audience. The company is weaving Gemini into everything from Search and Gmail to Maps and YouTube, and that built-in reach is hard to beat.
For context, OpenAI announced in July that it had reached one billion users across all its platforms, led by ChatGPT, though it didn't clarify if that was monthly or weekly. The San Francisco lab sparked the whole AI boom when it launched ChatGPT for free back in November 2022 and built that user base from scratch in less than four years.
That user number matters too, with every metric feeding into the valuation OpenAI is hoping for ahead of a potential IPO, after filing a confidential application in June.
The competition is only getting tighter. According to research firm Sensor Tower, ChatGPT's market share for AI assistants fell below 50% in the first half of the year as it faces pressure from Gemini, China's DeepSeek, and Anthropic's Claude.
