Ghana recalls High Commissioner to Nigeria over alleged involvement in NDC parliamentary primaries irregularities...
President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has ordered the immediate recall of the country’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Ahmed, following allegations of irregularities during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
A statement released by the Presidency in Accra at the weekend said the decision came after concerns were raised about Mr. Ahmed’s involvement in the primaries while serving as a public officer.
Notably, he was also one of the aspirants in the party exercise.
The presidency explained that the recall takes effect immediately and was necessary to prevent any appearance of wrongdoing or a breach of the government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.
The statement noted that given the circumstances, Mr. Ahmed could no longer continue in his role as High Commissioner.
According to the statement, allegations of vote-buying were reported against multiple aspirants during the primaries held on Saturday.
These claims sparked growing concern within the party and the government.
CBI News reports that the action followed a public announcement by the General Secretary of the NDC that the party had begun its own investigation into the allegations arising from the election.
While acknowledging the party’s internal probe, the presidency said swift action was necessary to uphold the standards expected of public officers.
Consequently, the Minister for Foreign Affairs was directed to implement all administrative and diplomatic measures required to enforce the recall.
The government emphasized that the decision was made without interfering with the party’s ongoing processes and aimed solely at protecting the integrity of public service.
