Education Ministry halts GTEC directive on post-retirement contracts, citing need for broader stakeholder consultation.
Ghana’s Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to immediately withdraw its earlier communications on post-retirement contracts for senior academic staff in public universities.
CBI News reports that the directive affects letters issued on 30 September and 1 October 2025, which had outlined provisions regarding the engagement of retired lecturers under contractual arrangements.
The move follows a meeting between the minister and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana, which had raised concerns over both the substance and communication of the policy.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the minister’s press secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, the government said the withdrawal was necessary to allow for broader consultations before any final policy direction is adopted.
“The decision has been taken pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any policy direction reflects broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector,” the statement said.
The ministry emphasised that the step forms part of a wider effort to ensure policies affecting higher education are carefully reviewed, inclusive, and aligned with the long-term stability of the sector.
It added that government remains committed to a transparent and consultative approach in addressing issues within the tertiary education space, particularly those with implications for staffing, institutional capacity, and academic continuity.
