Ghana has begun evacuating hundreds of its citizens from South Africa following a fresh wave of xenophobic attacks and anti-immigrant protests.
The Ghanaian government has announced plans to evacuate 300 citizens from South Africa amid rising xenophobic tensions and attacks targeting foreign nationals.
Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said President John Dramani Mahama approved the rescue operation after affected Ghanaians registered with the country’s High Commission in Pretoria.
According to Ablakwa, the evacuees complied with earlier government advisories following renewed anti-immigrant protests and reports of intimidation and assaults against African migrants.
CBI News reports that both Nigeria and Ghana have raised concerns over the situation, although the South African government insists the country is not xenophobic.
Presidential spokesman Vincent Magwenya said the protests were isolated incidents permitted under the country’s constitutional framework.
South Africa, Africa’s largest economy, hosts more than three million foreign nationals, but high unemployment and economic pressure have fuelled tensions over the years.
