From Ballon d'Or to the presidency, and now to Port Harcourt! George Weah is coming to the NBA Conference.
The Nigerian Bar Association has just pulled off a massive coup. Former Liberian President George Weah will deliver the keynote address at the 2026 Annual General Conference holding in Port Harcourt from 21st to 28th August.
Yes, that George Weah.
The NBA announced on Tuesday that the former world football star, who led Liberia from 2018 to 2024, will headline this year’s gathering themed “Beyond Limits.”
And honestly, it makes sense. According to the organisers, they picked Weah not just for his politics, but for his all-round legacy, public service, sports, humanitarian work, and his role in strengthening democracy in Africa.
Chairman of the NBA Annual General Conference Planning Committee, Abdul Muhammed (SAN), put it quite nicely. He said announcing His Excellency Weah as keynote speaker underscores the Bar’s commitment to elevating the quality of discourse around this year’s theme.
They’re also not forgetting his record in office. The committee pointed to his tuition-free education policy for public universities, his push on infrastructure, and, perhaps most importantly, that graceful concession after the 2023 presidential runoff. Handing over power peacefully? That’s democratic leadership in action.
Of course, before all the politics, there was football. A UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and, in 1995, the first, and still the only African to win the Ballon d’Or, FIFA World Player of the Year and African Footballer of the Year in the same year. Iconic.
The NBA says this year’s conference is a big one, coming just before Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Expect serious conversations about governance, law, and where Nigeria is headed politically and economically.
It’s building on last year’s edition in Enugu, which had South Africa’s Julius Malema as keynote speaker. Port Harcourt has a lot to live up to!
