Bode George tells Tinubu to restore confidence in Nigeria's electoral system...
A Chieftain of Nigeria’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the country’s electoral process to remain sacrosanct ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Bode George, a former PDP deputy national chairman, made the remarks in an open letter addressed to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Friday in Lagos.
“I must emphasise that the integrity of our electoral process must remain sacrosanct,” George said.
“There must be no manipulation whatsoever by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in any form or manner.
“The will of the Nigerian people must prevail freely, transparently, and without interference.”
He warned that any deviation from credible electoral practices would undermine democracy and weaken the foundation of national unity and legitimacy.
George said Nigeria’s stability, unity and democratic future were under visible strain, expressing concern over developments within the country’s political space.
“I speak out of conviction, experience, and duty to truth, not anger or partisanship, but sincere patriotism,” he said.
“What is unfolding within our political space today raises grave concern. Democracy cannot survive where opposition is weakened, ridiculed, or systematically neutralised.”
He added that a system without credible dissent risks instability.
“A country governed without credible dissent is not stable; it is volatile,” he said.
George said that leadership depends on trust built on fairness, transparency and justice, warning that such trust is currently under pressure.
