UK lawmakers urge Prime Minister Keir Starmer to confront Tinubu over killings of Christians in Nigeria.
Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom have called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to confront President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the killing of Christians in Nigeria during his ongoing state visit to the country.
CBI News reports that Tinubu and his wife, Remi Tinubu, are scheduled to be hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, where they will attend a state banquet as guests of honour.
The Nigerian president is also expected to travel to 10 Downing Street on Thursday for talks with Starmer, marking the first state visit by a Nigerian president to the UK in 37 years.
Lawmakers from the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Freedom of Religion or Belief (APPG FoRB) have written to the UK Development Minister, Jenny Chapman, urging the British government to pressure Tinubu to strengthen the protection of human rights in Nigeria.
The lawmakers expressed concern over Nigeria’s reputation as one of the most dangerous countries in the world for Christians, citing repeated coordinated attacks by extremist groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province.
Speaking on the matter, the chairman of the group, Jim Shannon, said Nigeria must take urgent steps to address the situation.
He stated that the country must “take concrete steps to prevent the harassment, persecution and killing of Christians, while ensuring that perpetrators are investigated and prosecuted.”
The group, which consists of 209 MPs and peers, also expressed concern that Nigerian authorities have not treated the attacks with the level of seriousness required.
They further asked the UK government to seek clarity on the case of Leah Sharibu, one of the 110 schoolgirls abducted in 2018.
In addition, the APPG FoRB urged Starmer to ensure that human rights obligations are prioritised in all future diplomatic, security and trade discussions with Nigeria.
The lawmakers have requested a response from Baroness Chapman ahead of the president’s state visit.
