Gas Tanker Catches Fire After Hitting Speed Bump in Ikotun

It could have been a major disaster in Ikotun in the early hours of today, but for the swift response of Lagos emergency teams.
Disaster was narrowly averted in the early hours of Thursday after a gas-laden tanker went up in flames along Abaranje Road in Ikotun, Lagos.
According to cbinews.tv, the incident happened at Ola Farm Bus Stop and was quickly brought under control by emergency responders, with no casualties or injuries recorded.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Olawale Afolabi, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the agency’s response team arrived at the scene to find the tanker completely engulfed in flames.
He explained that preliminary findings showed the tanker was travelling at high speed when it hit a road bump, causing the driver to lose control.
“Initial findings indicate that the vehicle was travelling at speed when it struck a road bump. The impact caused the driver to lose control, which led to a tyre burst and an immediate fire outbreak,” the statement read.
Afolabi said LASEMA officials worked hand-in-hand with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to put out the fire, cordon off the area and stop the blaze from spreading to nearby houses, shops and other road users.
He added that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and officers of the Nigeria Police from the Ikotun Division were on ground to manage traffic and control the crowd all through the operation.
He noted that efforts are still ongoing to evacuate the burnt tanker from the road, with heavy-duty equipment already deployed to remove the vehicle and restore free flow of traffic.
Reacting to the incident, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, urged motorists to respect speed limits, especially around speed bumps and residential areas.
“We use this opportunity to remind all motorists of the importance of adhering to speed limits, particularly around designated bumps and in residential corridors. Such caution saves lives and protects property,” he said.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to disaster preparedness, rapid emergency response and public safety across Lagos State, while commending all responding agencies and residents for their cooperation.
He also urged members of the public to report emergencies promptly through the state’s toll-free emergency lines 112 and 767.
