What should have been a normal school day in Ijebu-Ode turned into chaos and fear as yet another suspected gas leak left more than 100 students and teachers struggling to breathe, fainting, and rushing to hospitals.
According to reports from cbinews.tv, panic broke out on Friday in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, after multiple schools were hit by a suspected gas leak incident that affected over 100 students and teachers. This comes less than two months after a similar episode in the same area left dozens hospitalised.
The affected schools reportedly include Anglican Girls’ Grammar School, Obalende, and Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Epe Garage, alongside other public schools in the area.
Eyewitness accounts say students suddenly began complaining of stomach pain, dizziness, and severe weakness, with several collapsing before they could be assisted. Many were quickly rushed to the Ogun State General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, while others were taken to private hospitals as facilities became overwhelmed.
A disturbing viral video also showed students fleeing in panic while teachers tried to help those who had fainted. One teacher pleaded for urgent government intervention, calling for immediate support for the affected children.
An eyewitness at the hospital described the situation as worse than the previous incident, saying medical facilities were already overcrowded with affected students while parents continued to arrive with more cases.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, said emergency response measures had been activated, with relevant agencies including the Ministry of Education, OGEPA, security operatives, and local government authorities working to contain the situation and investigate its source.
Officials from the Ijebu Ode Local Government and the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) were also seen moving around affected schools and hospitals, assessing the situation and ensuring victims received medical attention.
The state government has urged residents to remain calm, assuring the public that investigations are ongoing. Preliminary findings from an air quality monitoring device installed at Ijebu-Ode Grammar School reportedly detected elevated methane levels in the environment, with peaks reaching about 13,500 parts per million.
As investigations continue, concerns are growing among parents and residents over the recurring nature of the incident and the safety of students in the area.
