Big names, big tensions. The G7’s back in Evian-les-Bains and this time, Trump’s Iran announcement just blew the agenda wide open.
So, the big guns are rolling into France. World leaders started arriving on Monday at the Hotel Royal in Evian-les-Bains for this year’s G7 summit, and there’s already plenty of drama to go round. The buzz? US President Donald Trump says he’s brokered a deal to end America’s war with Iran — and that’s given the whole summit a fresh jolt of urgency. Donald Trump
Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was first through the door on Monday morning, beating everyone to the Hotel Royal. Host Emmanuel Macron wasn’t far behind, turning up with European Council President Antonio Costa and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Trump is due to land Monday afternoon for face-to-face talks with the other G7 leaders. Awkward? A bit. He’s been at odds with Macron, UK PM Keir Starmer, Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni over launching the war without looping them in. The conflict’s been rumbling for about 15 weeks now and it’s sent global energy prices soaring.
Trump isn’t hiding his irritation either. He’s threatened to pull US troops out of all four countries — yes, they’re all NATO allies — because he reckons they didn’t back him.
Quick refresher: the G7 is France, the US, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK. This year’s guest list is stacked too — Brazil, Egypt, India, Kenya, South Korea, Qatar, Syria, Ukraine, and the UAE are all joining the party.
Iran’s top of the agenda, but don’t forget Ukraine. It’s slipped down the White House priority list, but it’s still on the table. Trump spoke to both Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday. Zelenskyy gets the floor Tuesday morning to update everyone on how Ukrainian forces are holding up against Russia’s invasion.
