Tensions are rising at the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital after workers downed tools. But management is pushing back, calling the strike illegal while insisting patient care will not suffer, cbinews.tv reports.
The management of Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital in Ondo State has come out strongly against the industrial action started by some of its workers, cbinews.tv reports.
The hospital chapter of the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals kicked off the strike earlier, demanding that the hospital withdraw its organogram and create a separate Department of Medical Laboratory Services.
According to cbinews.tv, the union is also protesting the appointment of two deputy chairmen to the Medical Advisory Committee for Clinical Services and Diagnostic Services at the teaching hospital.
In a statement released on Thursday, the hospital’s Head of Public Relations Unit, Mr Tope Fayehun, described the ongoing strike by NUAHP members as illegal.
Still, the institution made it clear that quality healthcare delivery remains the top priority of the Federal Government owned facility, even with the union action going on.
Management said every administrative decision taken by the hospital has been guided by existing public service rules, relevant government circulars, and the hospital’s approved schemes of service.
The hospital also addressed a directive that has caused some friction. Staff were asked to submit their office and access keys to the security unit during periods of industrial action. cbinews.tv reports that the hospital clarified this is not a punishment. Instead, it is a long standing administrative and security protocol put in place by a previous administration and reaffirmed by the current management.
The statement explained that the directive is meant to safeguard hospital facilities, protect sensitive medical equipment, and ensure accountability for public assets when services are disrupted.
