Residents decry increase in goods and transportation after fuel price hike...
Residents of Maiduguri are grappling with rising living costs following recent increases in fuel prices across Nigeria.
From transportation to food prices, the impact is being felt in nearly every household.
The ripple effect of fuel price hikes is becoming increasingly visible across Maiduguri.
While queues at filling stations have reduced, residents say the relief comes at the cost of significantly higher pump prices.
Transportation fares have surged, leaving many commuters struggling to keep up with the rising cost.
Speaking to CBI News TV, Faisal Adamu, a commercial tricycle rider, said "We have no choice but to increase fares to stay in business, it really affects our daily life. we use to buy twenty thousand fuel for our keke-napep daily, as a result all the money we make goes back to filling stations. we urge the government to see us through this hard time."
Also, Audu Marte, businessman based in Maiduguri, “We buy fuel at a higher price now. If we don’t increase prices on our goods, we cannot survive. Things are worse now because the fuel price has caused an increase in everything in the country."
The effect extends beyond transportation. Food prices in local markets have also risen as traders factor in higher transportation and logistics costs.
A resident, Isaac Gwari, describes the situation as very challenging. He says he used to pay about two hundred naira for transport, but now it has risen to four hundred or even five hundred.
For many families, the situation now means cutting down on daily expenses and adjusting to a tougher economic reality.
Babagana Usman, a civil servant, says they now buy less food and manage what they have. He lamented that things are really hard.
Economic analysts warn that without measures to stabilise fuel prices or provide relief, the financial pressure on households may continue to grow.
Dr Abubakar Umar, a lecturer at the University of Maiduguri, calls on government at all levels to take necessary steps to address the rising cost of fuel and its impact on citizens.
As residents of Maiduguri continue to adjust to the rising fuel costs, many are calling on the government to intervene and ease the growing burden on households.
