Search underway after visitor disappears during Saharan festival in Ennedi Massif.
A French tourist has been missing since late Wednesday in Chad’s northeastern tourist area of Guelta de Bachikele, a local government representative told reporters on Thursday.
Mahamat Togou Tchohimi said the missing visitor was attending the International Festival of Saharan Cultures, which opened last Saturday in a region bordering conflict‑affected Sudan.
The tourist set off with a friend, also French, without a guide to explore the area. Authorities began searching after noticing their absence. One of the two was found, but the other remains missing.
Guelta de Bachikele is an oasis located in the Ennedi Massif mountain range of northern Chad.
After a seven year break, the city of Amdjarass is hosting an open‑air celebration of desert culture this week, running through Friday, with Niger as the guest nation.
