Ten confirmed dead and dozens still missing as search operations continue near Tobruk.
Four migrants have been rescued in the Mediterranean more than five days after a boat that was meant to take them to Europe capsized off the coast of Libya, according to three Libyan sources and the International Organization for Migration on Monday.
Ten migrants have been confirmed dead in the disaster near Tobruk in eastern Libya, while thirty one others remain missing. Six bodies were recovered on Saturday after washing ashore.
The International Organization for Migration said search efforts are still ongoing. Security sources said the migrants involved are from Egypt and Sudan.
Libya remains a major transit route for migrants, many of them from sub Saharan Africa, who risk dangerous journeys across the desert and sea in an attempt to reach Europe while fleeing conflict and poverty.
United Nations data collected at the end of last year indicates that Libya now hosts well over nine hundred thousand migrants across its one hundred municipalities.
