Security Forces Open Fire and Use Teargas as Crowds Overwhelm Stadium.

Four people were killed in Kenya’s capital Nairobi on Thursday after security forces opened fire and used teargas to disperse massive crowds at a stadium where the body of opposition leader Raila Odinga was lying in state, local media reported.

Odinga, an influential figure in Kenyan politics who once spent time as a political prisoner and ran for president five times, died on Wednesday at the age of 80 while receiving medical treatment in India.

CBI News reports that tensions flared when thousands of supporters gathered from early morning. According to a witness, chaos broke out after crowds forced their way through a gate at Nairobi’s main stadium, prompting soldiers to fire warning shots into the air.

A police source confirmed that two people were shot dead at the scene. Two Kenyan television stations later reported the death toll had risen to four, with many others injured.

Following the gunfire, police deployed teargas to disperse the mourners, leaving the stadium largely empty.

Earlier, a large crowd of Odinga supporters briefly overran Nairobi’s international airport, disrupting a ceremony where President William Ruto and senior officials had gathered to receive Odinga’s body with military honours.
