It’s a grim Thursday on Croatia’s northern Adriatic coast. A light aircraft came down just outside Medulin in Istria, and police now say four people are dead with another two still unaccounted for.

According to cbinewstv, pulling from Croatian police and state broadcaster HRT, the crash happened at Campanoz, right by the Medulin sports airfield on the Istria peninsula.

Police put it simply: four bodies have been recovered so far, and emergency crews are still searching for two more people. Several people were killed when the small plane crashed on Thursday near Medulin, and rescuers were searching for two more, with police, firefighters and medics all at the site.

The national firefighting organisation flagged it first on social media, saying crews were scrambled immediately. Local media have since shared images of the wreckage in scrubland near the runway.

Here’s the bit that’s still a little messy. HRT reports the aircraft was registered in Germany and had taken off from Austria with Medulin as its destination, and witnesses described a black-red-gold German flag visible on the tail. Index.hr, meanwhile, told Hina the plane took off from Germany. Either way, it was a cross-border hop to Istria that ended in tragedy.

It’s early, so no cause yet. The site has been cordoned off while investigators from Croatia’s civil aviation authority work alongside local police.
