At least 40 people, including students, were killed and 48 others injured after Israeli strikes hit a girls’ primary school in the southern Iranian city of Minab, state media reported on Saturday.
Iranian broadcaster IRIB, quoting a provincial official, said the school in Hormozgan province was struck during attacks earlier in the day.
The United States and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran early Saturday, saying the operation was aimed at removing “threats” posed by the Iranian government.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump released separate video statements indicating the action could also support efforts for political change in Tehran.
Iran condemned the strikes as a violation of its sovereignty, vowed to respond and launched retaliatory attacks.
The escalation comes as Oman has been mediating talks between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme, with the latest round held in Geneva on Thursday.
