Botswana is mourning the loss of former President Festus Mogae, who has died at the age of 86 after a distinguished career marked by economic growth and a globally praised fight against HIV/AIDS.
CBI News reports that the presidency confirmed on Friday that Mogae, who led Botswana from 1998 to 2008, passed away at the age of 86.
Widely respected across Africa and beyond, the former leader was celebrated for his steady leadership, economic reforms, and bold public health policies that helped Botswana confront one of the world’s highest HIV/AIDS infection rates during his time in office.
Current President Duma Boko paid tribute to Mogae, describing him as a dedicated patriot whose commitment to Botswana never wavered.
“As a nation, we grieve the loss of a remarkable leader and servant of the people whose commitment to Botswana remained unwavering throughout his life,” Boko said in an official statement.
The Botswana government has declared three days of national mourning in honour of the late statesman, with flags ordered to fly at half-mast across the country.
An economist by training, Mogae studied in Britain before rising through Botswana’s public service and political ranks. During his decade-long presidency, Botswana recorded strong economic growth and maintained its reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies.
He gained international recognition for openly addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis at a time when many African leaders were reluctant to confront the epidemic publicly.
Under his administration, Botswana expanded access to antiretroviral treatment and partnered with global organisations to strengthen healthcare interventions, moves that were widely credited with saving thousands of lives.
Mogae’s leadership style, often described as calm, disciplined, and reform-driven, earned him respect both domestically and internationally.
Tributes have continued to pour in from political leaders, diplomats, and citizens across Africa, many remembering him as a symbol of integrity, responsible governance, and visionary leadership.
