Betty Akeredolu defends move to Labour Party...
Betty, wife of the late former Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has responded to critics over her decision to align with the Labour Party (LP) ahead of the 2027 elections.
In an Instagram post, Betty, who is seeking to contest the Imo East Senatorial seat, said she has faced a wave of reactions, including support, criticism, and attacks following her political move.
Her decision has drawn attention partly because her late husband was a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reacting to the backlash, she defended her choice, stating that it was driven by values rather than party allegiance.
“I will not apologise for choosing purpose over politics,” she wrote.
“In the last 24 hours, I’ve seen the reactions support, criticism, even attacks because of my decision to align with the #LabourParty Nigeria in my bid for Imo East Senatorial seat.”
Betty also addressed questions about her origin, clarifying her ties to Imo State despite her years of residence in Ondo.
“Let me be clear. I am a daughter of #Emeabiam in #OwerriWest Local Government of #ImoState. That is my root, my identity, and my responsibility. Yes, I have lived and served in #OndoState but Nigeria must move beyond the idea that service is confined by geography.”
She explained that her choice of platform was influenced by its stance on inclusion and women’s participation in leadership.
“I have chosen a platform that reflects inclusion one that recognises women in leadership.”
Emphasising her motivation, she added, “This is not about party loyalty. It is about purpose, people, and progress. I am focused. I am prepared. And I am committed to delivering real impact.”
