Deadly floods hit southern Russia, thousands evacuated as rains continue.
Flooding triggered by heavy rains has killed three people in southern Russia, the emergencies ministry said Monday, noting that about 4,000 residents have been evacuated while search and rescue operations remain underway.
Videos circulating on social media showed villages and highways submerged in water in Dagestan, a republic in the Caucasus mountains. Several vehicles were overturned and left stranded along flooded roads.
In the regional capital, Makhachkala, part of a multi-storey apartment building collapsed amid the severe conditions.
Authorities said rising water levels followed intense rainfall, worsening flooding across streets and residential neighborhoods.
Two of the victims, including a child, died when floodwaters swept over a highway and overturned two vehicles, according to the emergencies ministry. A third person was killed in a landslide.
Local officials also reported that some water filtration plants were shut down due to power outages caused by the storm.
Emergency crews, numbering in the thousands, are continuing response efforts as more heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days.
The region had already been hit by a major flood just a week earlier, which caused widespread power cuts and led authorities to declare a state of emergency.
