This is the second attack on the US embassy in Baghdad since the start of the conflict involving Israel, the United States and Iran.
Flames and thick smoke were seen rising from inside the United States Embassy compound in Baghdad on Saturday following an attack on the diplomatic complex.
Images showed a fire burning on the roof of a building as smoke billowed from the complex.
No group had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of publication, and Iraqi authorities had not yet issued an official statement.
Iranian media reported that the strike targeted the embassy’s air defence system, claiming that a missile struck the helipad inside the compound.
The US charge d’affaires in Iraq, Joshua Harris, said Washington’s military campaign was directed at Iran and described the US response across the region as limited, focused and defensive, aimed at protecting American interests and facilities.
Harris also reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to its strategic partnership with Iraq, stressing continued efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.
Following the outbreak of the conflict, the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) announced a 'comprehensive confrontation' against US forces in response to airstrikes targeting its positions and its support for Iran.
The escalation follows the joint US-Israeli military operation against Iran launched on February 28, after which Tehran announced retaliatory strikes on Israeli territory and US assets across the region. Explosions were subsequently reported in several Gulf countries.
