A major fire tore through Singa Market (also known as Singer Market), one of northern Nigeria's largest commodity hubs, on Saturday, February 14, 2026, destroying numerous shops and goods worth millions of naira.
CBI News reports that the blaze began around 4:00–4:30 p.m. in the Gidan Glass section along Ado Bayero Road near Murtala Muhammad Way, spreading rapidly through the crowded provision stores. Thick smoke was visible across the city, causing panic among traders and residents.
This is the second fire at the market in under two weeks, following an earlier incident in early February that also caused heavy losses.
CBI News noted that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kano State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, Dangote Group Fire Unit, and other responders worked to contain the flames, which persisted into the evening. No casualties were reported.
The cause remains under investigation, but the incident has renewed calls for improved fire safety and infrastructure in Kano's busy markets. Traders are now assessing damages amid widespread sympathy and concern over lost livelihoods.
The fire was eventually brought under control late Saturday, with full containment and assessments ongoing.
