Fire engulfs old Murtala Muhammed International Airport terminal in Lagos amid renovation works...
A fire outbreak has reportedly engulfed the old terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, a facility currently undergoing a multi-billion-naira renovation.
CBI News reports that as of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire and the extent of damage remain unclear.
The affected terminal forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise the airport’s infrastructure and improve passenger experience.
It was gathered that emergency responders were quickly deployed to the scene to contain the blaze.
However, aviation authorities were yet to issue an official statement detailing the incident or confirming whether operations at other sections of the airport were affected.
Passengers and workers within the vicinity were reportedly thrown into panic as smoke billowed from parts of the facility.
The development comes nearly two years after a fire incident occurred at the international wing of the same airport.
On September 6, 2023, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) disclosed that a suspected electrical spark at the baggage hall ceiling triggered a smoke incident at Terminal 1.
According to FAAN, the source of the smoke was traced to a burning lithium-ion battery installation in the basement of the terminal.
