Is FIFA about to kill the very game it claims to grow? The boss of La Liga certainly thinks so, and he’s not mincing his words.

Right, so the head of Spanish football has gone OFF on FIFA.

La Liga president Javier Tebas has accused world football’s governing body of acting “irresponsibly” after news broke that FIFA are discussing a massive 64-team World Cup for 2030.

Speaking to Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published on Tuesday, Tebas didn’t hold back. He even said FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s time is “over”.

According to him, there’s a “system that is fundamentally flawed” which has allowed Infantino to lead for a decade.

His biggest gripe? FIFA is putting one tournament ahead of the entire football ecosystem.

As reported by cbinews.tv, Tebas said: “The football industry is not just about the World Cup, however important it may be.”

“They are destroying the football industry — which generates tens of thousands of jobs — for an event that lasts 40 days and involves only a minority of players.”

Remember, at the World Cup opening ceremony back in June, Infantino floated the idea of “discussions about expanding to 64 teams” for the centenary World Cup in 2030. That edition is set to be co-hosted mainly by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina also hosting a few matches.

Tebas is furious, arguing domestic leagues are the ones actually keeping the sport alive.

“We have repeatedly expressed our concerns about the competition calendar. And now they want to organise a 64-team World Cup,” he added.

“We need fewer national teams and better protection for domestic football at all levels. They don’t realise this and are making decisions irresponsibly.”

Strong words. But with fixtures piling up and players stretched to breaking point, is he wrong?
