Hold on, no more NFF elections for now. FIFA and CAF have hit the pause button.

So, here’s what’s happening.

Football’s big bosses, FIFA and CAF, have officially suspended the ongoing Nigeria Football Federation electoral process. And they’re not just watching from afar, they’re packing their bags for Abuja.

In a joint letter to the NFF, signed by FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov, both bodies confirmed they are still trying to get their heads around the full mess, what they called the “legal, governance, administrative and electoral implications” of the current crisis.

And what a crisis it is. This comes after the shock resignations of the NFF President, several Executive Committee members, and the General Secretary.

According to cbinews.tv, FIFA and CAF revealed they had already met with the NFF administration and the Federal Government at the Home of FIFA in Zurich on September 1 to discuss the situation, but they haven’t reached any conclusions just yet.

Their words? “At this stage, FIFA and CAF have not reached any conclusions regarding the matters under review and no determination has been made with respect to any potential next steps.”

For now, they’ve asked everyone to freeze.

“Furthermore, and without prejudice to the outcome of the ongoing assessment, FIFA and CAF request that the ongoing electoral process be suspended and that no further steps or decisions be taken in connection to that process until further notice,” the statement read.

The idea, they say, is to “preserve the status quo” while they sort things out. They’ve also made the NFF Deputy General Secretary the main point of contact until further notice.

And to be clear, this isn’t them taking sides. FIFA and CAF stressed this suspension shouldn’t be seen as a judgement on who is right or wrong in the NFF saga.

What’s next? A joint FIFA-CAF assessment mission will land in Abuja “at the earliest possible opportunity” to meet with the NFF administration, NFF members, the electoral bodies, and the Federal Government, including the National Sports Commission.

They want to hear everyone out and see what needs fixing under FIFA, CAF and NFF rules before they decide whether to make any formal recommendations.

Until then, as they put it: “The outcome of the assessment remains open and no assumptions should be made as to any action that FIFA and CAF may or may not take.”

So yes, Nigerian football is officially on hold. Watch this space.
