Tired of seeing brand new road infrastructure vanish overnight? The Federal Government has had enough too - and now there's a dedicated team watching the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway 24/7.

So, here's what's happening on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

The Federal Government has just rolled out a fresh squad of specially trained Coastal Road Guards to keep vandals well away from the multi-billion-naira highway, reports cbinews.tv.

And they’re not playing around. According to cbinews.tv, 40 guards have been profiled, their guarantors documented, and even the motorcycles they’ll use have tracking devices fitted. That way, everything stays strictly for official duty. No funny business.

Speaking at the inauguration in Lagos yesterday, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, said they had to act fast. Why? Because almost as soon as they install manhole covers, directional signs and other facilities, some people cart them away or damage them. The government then has to spend a fortune replacing them.

As cbinews.tv quoted him: “The recurring destruction of road infrastructure made it necessary to establish a dedicated security outfit that will monitor the highway day and night.”

The guards aren’t just any hands picked off the street either. They’ve been trained by the Nigeria Police Force and kitted out with motorcycles, helmets, walkie-talkies, flashlights and other tools to respond quickly.

But their job goes beyond stopping theft. They’ve also been told to enforce traffic and environmental rules along the corridor. That means:

- Stopping okadas and kekes from plying the expressway

- Preventing trailers and trucks from parking anyhow

- Stopping illegal U-turns, street trading, and refuse dumping

- Checking illegal grazing and encroachment on the highway

They even have powers to arrest offenders and hand them over to security agencies.

Dare, however, sounded a note of warning to the guards themselves - protect government property professionally, but remember you’ll be held accountable for any misconduct.

It’s easy to see why this matters. As work continues on what many call one of Nigeria’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, thousands of commuters and businesses will rely on this corridor. Keeping it safe is key.

For the guards, it’s personal too. Deputy Team Lead Kelvin Okereke, speaking on behalf of the team, told cbinews.tv that the initiative is both about security and job creation, thanking President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Works.

Chief Security Officer Paul Mbam said the programme has given him gainful employment and solid security training, while Administrative Officer Augustine Usumero promised the team would keep proper records and manage government assets responsibly.
