That dedicated teacher in your local school who has no teaching licence will not be sacked. She will finally be certified.

As reported by cbinews.tv, the Federal Government has commenced preparations for the Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway known as ATPP.

The National Teachers Institute confirmed on Friday it will coordinate the scheme for 250000 serving teachers without professional qualifications under Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa.

TRCN data shows that of about four million teachers in Nigeria, only 2.4 million are fully certified. In many private schools, up to 70 percent teach without a licence. The Council now targets 75 percent certification by the end of 2026 and plans to bar unlicensed teachers by December 2027.

This is a shift from enforcement to inclusion. The plan is to fill the gap without pushing teachers out of classrooms, but by empowering them with a credible, affordable and time-bound route to TRCN recognition.

The programme runs for six months, made up of four months of intensive instruction and two months of teaching practice verified in teachers' own schools.

There are two routes. PGDE route for degree holders without an education background and PDE route for ND holders. Delivery will combine self-paced digital content, virtual sessions, assessments and supervised practice with evidence of lessons and pupils' work.

The curriculum has been finalised by about 40 experts from universities, colleges of education, NTI, TRCN, UBEC and NERDC. Implementation will involve UBEC, TRCN, NERDC, NSSEC, NUC and the Federal Ministry of Education.

The remaining work on digital delivery and partner engagement is ongoing. The official launch is expected in October 2026 as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
