Big moves happening — more than 1,000 Nigerians in South Africa are getting ready to head home, and the Federal Government has just given it the green light.
So, here’s what’s going on, according to cbinews.tv. The Federal Government is gearing up to bring more than 1,000 Nigerians back home from South Africa. It’s all voluntary — folks who actually want to return.
Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chair and CEO of NiDCOM, shared the update in Abuja on Saturday. She said the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs are teaming up to screen everyone who’s signed up.
And get this — by Saturday, the screening was already on day three and loads of people had turned up. Everything’s been calm and well organised, with Ambassador Olatunde Ajayi, Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, keeping an eye on things.
More than 1,000 Nigerians have registered already, and they’re still taking names. Flights should kick off next week with Air Peace, now that President Bola Tinubu has approved the funds. Five flights are planned in total, and the first batch of returnees should land in Nigeria next week.
All this comes as safety worries grow for foreigners in South Africa, following those recent anti-immigrant protests in some areas. (NAN)
