Nigeria’s television landscape is set for a major transformation as the Federal Government announces the launch of a free nationwide digital TV platform offering over 100 channels, improved picture quality, mobile access, and real-time audience measurement for advertisers.
According to CBI News TV, the Federal Government has confirmed plans to officially launch Nigeria’s nationwide Digital Switch Over (DSO) platform on June 17, marking a major milestone in the country’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement during a facility tour of NIGCOMSAT alongside the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Charles Ebuebu.
The new digital broadcasting platform will provide Nigerians with free access to more than 100 television channels, enhanced picture quality, wider content distribution, and advanced audience measurement tools for advertisers.
Idris described the project as a breakthrough after years of delays, noting that the upgraded platform would eliminate the expensive encrypted set-top boxes previously associated with the DSO initiative.
He added that the service would initially launch in Standard Definition (SD) before transitioning to High Definition (HD), positioning Nigeria’s broadcasting industry to compete globally.
The NBC also disclosed plans to establish six regional studios nationwide to boost local content production and reduce dependence on major production hubs like Lagos and Abuja.
Officials say the platform has already undergone successful testing and will also be accessible via mobile applications, allowing viewers to watch content seamlessly across devices and locations.
