Big news for Nigeria's digital future!

The Federal Government is just weeks away from kicking off one of its biggest digital infrastructure projects ever, and it's all about getting us properly connected.

The Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, made this known after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he went to brief the President on key projects in the ministry.

According to the Minister, the sector has seen real growth under the Tinubu administration, thanks to some bold reforms, including designating digital infrastructure as Critical National Infrastructure, telecoms tariff adjustments, and tax harmonisation.

And the main gist? The government has wrapped up resource mobilisation and all the contractual processes for the project. What’s next is physical work on the ground.

Tijani said, “We’re now at the point where, in a few weeks, we should start to lay those fibre, so people will start seeing us around the country deploying the fibre. This is going to transform Nigeria for good.”

The plan is huge; the 90,000-kilometre fibre optic network will cover every state, every geopolitical zone, every local government area and every single ward in the country.

As he put it, “This is a project where every state, every geopolitical zone, every local government and every ward in this country will be covered with fibre optic cables, which will transform the quality of connectivity.”

But that’s not all. The Minister also revealed that from October, the government will start deploying close to 3,700 new telecoms towers to boost mobile coverage in underserved communities. The project, which has already been approved by the President, is expected to connect over 20 million Nigerians who currently have little or no reliable network access.

“Before the end of the year, we’ll also start to deploy close to 3,700 towers. It’s taken a lot to put this project together, raising the capital for it, but we are at a point where we should now start deploying around October,” he added.

And there’s more on the way. Tijani announced that Nigeria will launch a new alphanumeric postcode system on October 1st, which will give every property in the country its own unique address.

He explained that the system “allows us to have unique addresses for every property. That will change the game significantly for Nigeria in terms of the delivery of public services”.

The new postcode system is expected to be a game-changer for logistics, e-commerce, emergency response and overall public service delivery.
