Driving the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway towards Ibadan? The Federal Government says that stretch is literally falling apart — and a full concrete rebuild is now on the cards.
Here’s the gist, as reported by cbinews.tv:
The Federal Government has confirmed what many motorists already know — the Ibadan axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is in a bad way. Even though Julius Berger finished work on that section, it’s now failing badly and has become really dangerous to drive on.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, shared the update while briefing State House correspondents after a Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja. According to Umahi, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Ministry of Works to kick off the due process to rebuild that damaged stretch. And this time, they’re going with reinforced concrete pavement technology.
Umahi didn’t mince words: “The Ibadan-bound axis is failing very badly. If you go there, you will see it is rotting, it is folding, and it is very dangerous for vehicular movement.”
What else was approved?
FEC also gave the green light to concession the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to Messrs Aspect Concession Limited under a modified switch approach. That means the private firm will handle operation and maintenance, matching PPP highway corridor models and industry best practices.
Other road updates from Umahi:
- The first 118km section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Highway — worth N257 billion — has been completed, mostly with concrete pavements. The remaining 164km stretch is ongoing and should wrap up by November.
- FEC approved 23 road projects across Adamawa, Taraba, Ebonyi, Kwara, Cross River, Kogi, Lagos, Niger, Oyo, and Plateau, totalling N2.078 trillion.
- The 409km dual-carriageway project in Niger State, handled by Dangote Group under a tax credit scheme, will cost ₦1.8325 trillion and also use reinforced concrete.
Quick background you should know:
Back in May 2025, the FG started palliative repairs on failing expansion joints at Kara, Arepo, and Magboro bridges along the expressway. That was after a crash at Arepo bus stop where several passengers were badly injured. Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, blamed the accident on a structural failure at one of the joints. She’d flagged those bridges as needing urgent intervention.
So, bottom line: that Ibadan section is getting a total redo, and concrete is the plan this time.
