Works minister warns of project suspension over poor construction standards and delays.
The Federal Government has given China Harbour Engineering Company and its sister firm China Harbour Operation and Maintenance Company seven days to address alleged substandard work, slow mobilisation and environmental hazards on major federal road projects.
CBI News reports that the ultimatum followed a meeting chaired by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, with ministry officials and representatives of the Chinese firms in Abuja.
The companies are concessionaires on the Mararraba Keffi Akwanga Lafia Makurdi dual carriageway.
The firms are also handling the Makurdi 9th Mile Enugu Road and the 7th Axial Road in Lagos.
Umahi said the intervention was prompted by public complaints and concerns over the protection of government investment. He disclosed that residents along the Makurdi 9th Mile Enugu corridor had petitioned the ministry over excessive dust from construction activities, posing environmental and health risks.
He directed that immediate dust control measures be implemented, warning that failure to comply within seven days would lead to suspension of the project.
The minister also ordered corrective works on failing sections of the Mararraba Keffi Akwanga Lafia Makurdi road, including reconstruction of the first five kilometres and rehabilitation of damaged portions, bridges and drainage systems.
Expressing concern over slow progress on the 7th Axial Road in Lagos despite funds already released, Umahi warned that the government would recover mobilisation funds and impose sanctions if contractors failed to meet agreed timelines.
He said the Tinubu administration would no longer tolerate poor execution, delays or breaches of contract standards, stressing the government’s commitment to safety, quality infrastructure and value for public funds.
