The Federal Government says work is progressing on the assembly of 10,000 electric vehicles planned for communities across the North-East. But what exactly is being rolled out, and who will benefit?
The Federal Government has inspected the ongoing assembly of 10,000 electric vehicles earmarked for the six North-East states.
The inspection took place on Thursday at the assembly plant in Maiduguri, Borno State, where the vehicles are being put together under the management of the North-East Development Commission, NEDC.
Speaking to journalists after the inspection, the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, said the project includes electric buses, tricycles and taxis, as well as charging infrastructure.
He said the vehicles are expected to serve both rural and urban communities across the region.
Momoh said he was impressed with the progress at the assembly plant, adding that nearly all the 10,000 electric vehicles and tricycles were already on site and assembly was underway.
The minister also commended the NEDC for its work in rebuilding the region after more than a decade of insurgency.
He said the Federal Government would continue to look at other areas where development interventions could have a greater impact across the North-East.
The project is part of efforts to improve transportation and support development in a region still recovering from years of insecurity.
CBI News TV will continue to follow the progress of the project and its impact on communities across the North-East.
