The Federal Government tasks members on transparency and effective oversight.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has inaugurated the Board of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s pension system and protecting the retirement savings of public servants.
CBI News reports that during the inauguration, Akume emphasized that the Board’s mandate includes providing strategic direction, policy guidance, and effective oversight in line with the Pension Reform Act 2014.
He noted that the exercise reflects government’s resolve to build a transparent, resilient, and trustworthy pension system for all Nigerians, and charged members to uphold the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and sound judgment, cautioning against interference in the Commission’s operational responsibilities.
Akume also reiterated the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to clear outstanding pension liabilities and ensure retirees receive their benefits promptly and with dignity.
Speaking on behalf of the Board, Opeyemi Agbaje assured the government of its commitment to transparency, corporate governance, and clear separation between oversight and management functions.
He added that the Board would support efforts to leverage pension funds as a driver of national development.
In separate remarks, the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, and PenCom Director-General, Omolola Bridget Oloworaran, highlighted ongoing reforms in pension administration, pledgeding continued collaboration to strengthen the Commission’s performance and deliver long-term benefits to retirees and workers.
The Board is chaired by Opeyemi Agbaje, alongside commissioners and representatives from key institutions including labour unions, financial regulators, and employer groups, reflecting a broad-based governance structure.
