Running out of time to finish those big-ticket projects? The House of Reps just hit the snooze button on the 2025 capital budget deadline.
Right, so here’s what’s happened, according to cbinews.tv. The House of Representatives held an emergency session on Monday and agreed to push the deadline for spending the capital part of the 2025 budget. It was supposed to wrap up on 30 June 2026, but they’ve now moved it to 30 September 2026.
Why the extension? Basically, a lot of those infrastructure projects and capital works haven’t been completed yet. House Leader Prof Julius Ihonvbere told fellow lawmakers it was “very straightforward” – if they didn’t extend it, the economy would take a hit.
He was quick to point out they’re not changing any figures or adding new money. It’s just a date change. “We are not touching any part of the law. It is simply extending the lifespan from June 30, 2026, to September 30, 2026,” Ihonvbere said.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas backed him up, saying records from the Appropriations Committee show implementation is still ongoing. Extending to September, he said, is “in the best interest of this country” so the Federal Government can meet its obligations.
The whole thing moved fast. The bill scaled first, second and third readings in one sitting after the House suspended its rules. Lawmakers went into the Committee of Supply, approved it clause-by-clause, and that was that.
So, what does this mean? Ministries, Departments and Agencies now get an extra three months to finish capital projects and spend the money already allocated for 2025. It’s a familiar story in Nigeria – delays from procurement hiccups, revenue shortfalls, and slow execution often mean capital budgets don’t finish on time. And those projects matter because they drive infrastructure, growth, and jobs.
In other House news, cbinews.tv reports there’s been a bit of a reshuffle in committee leadership following changes in the minority caucus. Here’s the new line-up:
- Ali Madaki – Chairman, Committee on Special Duties
- Ali Isa – Chairman, Committee on Shipping Services
- Pascal Agbodike – Chairman, Committee on SMEDAN
- Kelechi Nwogu – Chairman, Committee on Hydrological Services
Speaker Abbas told the new chairmen to get stuck in straight away and use their experience to boost oversight across key sectors.
