Big news for road users — the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Highway is finally seeing progress, and that’s just the start of a massive N3.9 trillion road revamp.
So, here’s the gist from cbinews.tv: the Federal Government has wrapped up the first 118km section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Highway. That bit alone cost a hefty N257 billion.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, dropped the update after Monday’s Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said the remaining 164km stretch should be done by November 2026. Fingers crossed.
But wait, there’s more. President Bola Tinubu has just greenlit 27 road projects worth over N3.9 trillion. We’re talking 15 states here — Adamawa, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba, and Yobe. It’s a proper nationwide push.
Some of the big-ticket approvals Umahi mentioned:
- N1.8 trillion — Re-award of the 409km dual carriageway in Niger State under the tax credit scheme to Aliko Dangote
- N276 billion — Dualisation of Ilorin-Ogbomoso Road
- N265 billion — Iseyin-Eruwa-Agbesi Road reconstruction linking Oyo and Kwara
- N217 billion — Dualisation of the old alignment from Ijaye through FGC to Ilorin Road, with a spur to Akinmorin
- N116 billion — 21km Abakaliki-Afikpo Road in Ebonyi State
- N110 billion — Ogbomoso-Oko-Illupu Road in Oyo and Osun
- N104 billion — Rehab of Ilorin-Omorin-Ebe-Kabba-Obajana Road in Kwara and Kogi
- N98 billion — 30km Idi-Araba-Ayede-Olodo Road in Oyo State
- N92 billion — Baban-Lamba-Sharan Phase Two Road in Plateau State
And it keeps going:
- N86 billion each for Enugu-Abakaliki Road with a flyover, and Adikpo-Ajayi-Tese-Akpa-Otukpo Road across Benue and Cross River
- N83 billion — Jimeta-Mayo Belwa Road in Adamawa
- N82 billion — Igbeti Road rehab in Oyo
- N74 billion — Igbeti-Soro-Kishi Road in Oyo
- N71 billion — 52km Dabban-Makina Road in Niger
- N62.99 billion — Tungo-Karamti Road with five bridges connecting Adamawa and Taraba
Plus, a bunch of others, including N58 billion for Yola-Hong-Mubi Road Phase Two, N46 billion for Amasiri-Okporojo Road, and N34 billion for the 18km Ikere-Ekiti-Ijare Road linking Ekiti and Ondo. There’s also N26 billion for a new flyover on the Trans-Sahara Road, N24.7 billion for Kabba-Ifaki-Ado Ekiti Road, and N21 billion for a flyover at Oko-Olowo Junction in Kwara.
Lagos got some love too — N15.7 billion for Pacific Road linking Igbe Laara to Ikorodu. Other approvals: N15.5 billion for Badeku-Jaiye Road in Oyo, N15.246 billion for Yola-Fufore-Gurin Road Phase Two in Adamawa, and N15 billion extra for the Gashua Road project in Yobe.
Umahi added that FEC also approved the business case for operating and maintaining the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, with concrete pavement reconstruction kicking off on failed sections along the Ibadan axis.
Quite the shopping list of roadworks, isn’t it? Let’s see how fast these roll out.
