Nigeria’s Federal Government has confirmed the killing of a top ISIS commander linked to deadly attacks in the North-East during a coordinated military operation with the United States Africa Command in the Lake Chad region.
According to cbinews.tv, the Federal Government has confirmed that Abu Bilal Al Minuki, described as the second-in-command of ISIS, has been killed during a joint counterterrorism operation carried out by the Nigerian Military and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).
The operation reportedly took place in the Lake Chad area following what officials described as meticulous planning and successful execution by forces from both countries.
The development was disclosed on Saturday in Abuja by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through a statement signed by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
According to the statement, Abu Bilal Al Minuki was allegedly responsible for several recent attacks on military formations in Nigeria’s North-East region.
“A Joint Operation by the Nigerian Military and the United States Africa Command has killed Abu Bilal Al Minuki, the Second in Command of ISIS, in the Lake Chad Area,” the statement read.
“The operation was carried out a few hours ago after meticulous planning and successful execution by the Armed Forces of the two Countries.”
The Ministry noted that the successful mission demonstrates the growing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in tackling terrorism and insurgency across the region.
The Federal Government also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued commitment to national security and commended the United States government for its partnership and support in Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations.
“Special thanks to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his commitment to keeping Nigeria safe and high commendations to the Government of the United States of America for their partnership and support in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria,” the statement added.
The Lake Chad region has remained a major hotspot for terrorist activities involving ISIS-affiliated groups and other insurgents operating across Nigeria and neighboring countries.
