As xenophobic tensions continue to rise in South Africa, the Nigerian government says the final screening of citizens seeking voluntary evacuation wraps up today, paving the way for their return home.
According to cbinewstv, the Federal Government has announced that the screening of Nigerians in South Africa who registered for voluntary evacuation following renewed xenophobic attacks will be completed today.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, explained that the exercise, which began on Thursday, is being carried out jointly by the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, the South African Police, and immigration authorities.
Ebienfa said the screening process is aimed at determining the exact number of Nigerians eligible for evacuation. Once the exercise is concluded, the Federal Government will finalise arrangements for aircraft deployment to bring the affected citizens back home.
“The screening exercise of Nigerians in South Africa that have registered to be evacuated will end today. At the end of the screening, we will have a definite figure that has been cleared for evacuation. Thereafter, government will finalise the details about deployment of aircraft to bring them home,” he stated.
The evacuation plan follows renewed anti-immigrant protests in Pretoria and Johannesburg, which prompted the Federal Government to offer willing Nigerians a safe route back to Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, had earlier revealed via her X account that 130 Nigerians initially registered for the evacuation programme. However, recent reports indicate that interest in the scheme has surged dramatically, with more than 1,000 Nigerians now seeking voluntary repatriation.
The development highlights growing concerns among Nigerians living in South Africa as tensions targeting foreign nationals continue to escalate.
