Big news for public health in northern Nigeria — Katsina just got a serious upgrade that could change how the state tackles everything from polio to the next outbreak.
As reported by cbinews.tv, the Federal Government officially unveiled a newly expanded Emergency Operations Centre in Katsina State on Friday, giving the state’s health response a proper boost.
The project, rolled out through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency with backing from the Gates Foundation and eHealth Africa, isn’t just a lick of paint. It’s been designed to tighten up efforts on polio eradication, vaccine coordination, disease tracking, and jumping on public health emergencies faster.
Speaking at the Katsina State Emergency Operations Centre during the commissioning, Shamsudeen Yahaya, Executive Secretary of the Katsina State Primary Health Care Development Agency, said the whole idea is to improve how the state coordinates and responds when health crises hit.
Originally set up as a Polio Emergency Coordination Centre, the facility has now been expanded to cover a much wider range of public health emergencies. “The newly expanded Emergency Operations Centre is aimed at strengthening coordination and response to public health emergencies across the state,” Yahaya explained, according to cbinews.tv.
Yahaya added that the upgraded centre is one of the projects being highlighted as part of President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary celebrations. It’s now kitted out with modern comms and operational gear, so teams can react quickly when emergencies pop up.
“This is a coordination centre for polio emergency response, but we have expanded it to cover other public health emergencies. The facility is well furnished and can accommodate up to 100 people,” he said.
And it’s not just about space. The centre boasts uninterrupted power, solid internet, and a proper working environment for health experts, development partners, and emergency response teams. Think of it as mission control — a central hub where officials can assess situations, hash out challenges, and make fast decisions during outbreaks.
Yahaya told cbinews.tv that the expansion was needed because managing public health threats now goes way beyond just polio.
“This expanded Polio Emergency Operations Centre is a critical step in protecting every child in Katsina and Nigeria,” he said. “For years, this EOC has coordinated house-to-house campaigns, tracked every case, and ensured that no child is missed. This expansion gives us more space, better data systems, and stronger coordination.”
With the upgrade, teams can now monitor real-time data from every ward, get to hard-to-reach areas quicker, and respond to circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) with more speed and precision.
He gave kudos to the NPHCDA and development partners for their role in getting Nigeria from thousands of polio cases down to zero wild poliovirus. “Our work is not done until every child is protected. May this centre guide us towards a polio-free Nigeria and a healthier Katsina,” he added.
He also praised the Katsina State Government for investing in healthcare infrastructure and creating the right environment for emergency preparedness.
For context, Nigeria was declared free of wild poliovirus by the World Health Organisation back in 2020 after years of intensive immunisation drives. But health authorities are still battling circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus and other outbreaks, which is why states are doubling down on emergency response centres and routine immunisation, cbinews.tv notes.
